Precision d10 Design Concept

Description

My obsession with precision, correctness, quality, and accuracy doesn't just extend to guns, you know.

I re-created a ten-sided die in NX with engraved numbers, and although the ten-sided shape on its own is fairly stable, depending on the type face the dice has a tendency to roll toward the even numbers more often, at least when you have ten sided dice that are arranged with the odd numbers on one side and the even numbers on the other, because the distribution of the weight isn't even.

Anyways, I decided the best fix for this would be to, instead of machine-engraving the pips or numbers on the faces, and calculating the volume of the stock removal, to have them laser-bonded on, probably using CerMark. This would add very, very, very little material to the die and the steel's weight would make it near negligible, so it'd be perfectly balanced.

The main difficulty in manufacturing these is that I'll need to find some way of fixturing them properly and due to the irregular shape and tapered size that probably won't be easy. I suppose I could use a six-jaw chuck, with a couple inserts at the bottom to hold it in place... ah well. I'll work on that another day.

I made this model 1" in diameter, and 1.2" from point to point, but I made the models parametric, so the letters should scale with the size and height quite easily.

Wait, are you making caltrops, ninja weapons, or the heaviest and most poorly rolling dice known to man? ;p
